Alaska Fish Fertilizer is the base for many of our drenches. The great thing about liquids is that the concentration can be changed based on what you are doing
Bone meal is a core part of any planting we do. Bone meal amends the soil with the nutrients necessary for strong root systems
Medina Soil Activator is a must for anyone starting a switch to using natural methods. The product is used in soil drenches to stimulate and strengthen microbes in the soil that are the workhorses of natural systems.
Liquid kelp provides trace nutrients, growth stimulation, and enhances the soil microbiome
Liquid molasses is great and can be used in place of dry molasses in foliar drenches or when space is an issue.
Perlite is a great addition that allows soil to breath and helps soils stay loose. A common addition to most potting mixes (it's the little white pieces).
Garden Tools
One of my favorite tools is actually my set of Clic reading glasses. According to Mrs. Gringo, I'm a "setter-downer" and I continually lost reading glasses by setting them random places. My Clics hang around my neck and are always there. I love them
We love our Felco pruning shears. Having been through multiple sets, these are the ones that have held up, stayed sharp, and continue to do a great job.
Water flow meters are critical on your drip systems. The only way you know you have a separated connection or leaks in the system is to understand your water flow. The bigger the system, the more imperative a flow meter is. We use the Restmo flow meters from Amazon and they do great
One of my must-have items on a daily basis is a multitool. I'm never sure what I am going to need and carrying a full toolbox is prohibitive, especially when I'm on foot. The Gerber Diesel is my every-day carry. The full-sized pliers and the file, saw, and knife have done great for me.
I love knives and have more that I can count. The one that is my workhorse and stays with me on the farm is my SOG Escape. The combination blade and the line cutter both get a workout
The Hoss planter is a must-have for us every spring. The planter is compact enough to use in tight spaces, but can seed large areas quickly
The Hoss wheel hoe is a multi-purpose tool that weeds, furrows, and cuts rows and gets regular use at the farm. We have the double-wheel hoe
Neversink Farms wind strip trays are the best thing we have found to start seeds. Super durable for many seasons and starts don't get rootbound
Fuel transfer pump from Harbor Freight. We use these to minimize fuel spillage when filling up our equipment
Cooking
We love to make black garlic as a part of what we do here on the farm. The garlic fermenter we use comes off of Amazon, is reasonably priced, and is a multi-function machine.
Electric pressure canners are multi-function machines that can act as slow cookers, pressure canners, or pressure cookers. We use ours heavily during canning season.
Beekeeping tools
We use Oz Armour vented beekeeping suits. We've found them to be the best intersection between cost, value, and utility. They fit well, are very durable, and have tons of pockets. You can find them here:
We've tried several different hive tools and have settled on the j-hook style. The configuration works best for us and seems to be the most functional with top-bar hives
Wine and Mead Making
Our favorite yeasts:
EC-1118 - A high-ABV tolerant yeast that is the single, best yeast to start your wine or mead making journey
Lalvin K1-V1116 - A great yeast for bringing out floral esters and the honey notes in mead and wine
Uvaferm VRB - A Spanish yeast for Tempranillo and similar varietals, brings out the dried fruit and jammy flavors in wine
Yeast Nutrient
Goferm should be used in the rehydration of your yeast to make sure they are strong and healthy, especially going into high-sugar musts
Fermaid O is a great, organic yeast nutrient that is used during the fermentation process
Wine Kits
Winexpert Tempranillo kit - Maybe my favorite grape to ferment. Most of the grapes here at the farm have the same flavor profile. The kit comes with all the base ingredients to make your own wine. One kit will make six gallons
Winexpert Sangiovese kit - My second favorite grape and similar to the Tempranillo in flavor profile. The kit has everything you need for a six gallon batch
Gifts we love because they are cool
If you have a coffee lover on your list, nothing says I love you more than this Yama Cold Brew setup. Is it absurd? Yes. Is it a fun way to make cold brew that is tasty? Also yes.
