The chickens also fill valuable roles at the farm, as they are responsible for the top of the regererative cycle as they graze, turn the dirt looking for grubs, and fertilize the grass

The bulk of our flock are a barnyard mix bred by a friend of the farm. The base breed are Easter Eggers, with Rhode Island Red, White Leghorn, and assorted other breeds thrown in for good measure. They were bred to be good foragers while free ranging and to be good egg layers. A smaller portion of our flock are Easter Eggers (used for green and blue eggs), Buff Orpington, and Barred Rock, with the latter two being dual purpose. Our ladies munch on a soy-free feed when not grazing in our orchard on bugs and grass. Each week they get a fresh yard and a fresh coop location, at which time we broadcast seeds and dry molasses to boost the fertilizer quality of the chicken manure.

Copper is our primary rooster and the leader of the flock. A mix with heavy parts Brown Leghorn, Copper is our alarm clock, flock guardian, and the primary genetic donor for the flock. With his stature and body size, we are hoping that a mix between him and our Buff Orpington will provide a strong candidate for a heritage-hybrid meat chicken.

Tony is our second rooster and is an Easter Egger mix. Tony is our backup rooster and at some point will be used to help build our sustainable laying flock. We loved his coloring and his docile nature, so he made the final cut out of the rest of our straight-run roosters.
